THE NUMBERS

According to the Missouri Department Of Insurance, here in Missouri we average hitting about 3,500 deer each year, give or take a few hundred.  And statistics show that the majority of those deer collisions take place over from around sundown to sunup in a 60 day span from roughly now through mid-December.

Do the math. That’s about 58 per day or just over 2 deer - vehicle collisions per hour.  In fact, chances are very good that somewhere in Missouri, someone has hit a deer while I have been writing this post.

HOW TO AVOID DEER STRIKES

The pros will tell you that when you see a deer, slow down as quickly and safely as possible.  Don’t make any abrupt changes in direction.  And remember, deer travel in groups.  Chances are you will need to avoid more than one deer crossing the road.
